There are really no blue hippos in the natural world. We just wanted to turn your attention to the plight of this vulnerable animal.

This ancient Egyptian hippo (hippopotamus) is some 4000 years old. The ceramic statuette was found in a tomb, where he was placed to magically transfer his powers to the deceased person, helping him gain rebirth.

Real hippos are, of course, brownish. Color blue was associated with the Nile River, a central feature of life in Egypt, and thus symbolized life. Painted lotus flowers on this hippo’s body symbolized regeneration and rebirth.

Today, hippopotamus populations in Africa are threatened by hunting for their meat, fat and tusks. They are also at risk from habitat loss.
